THE TIP. A clear plastic bottle and six hours of direct sun will disinfect drinking water for free, and there’s nothing extra to carry in to make it work. Fill a PET bottle (the soda kind, not the cloudy reusable kind) three-quarters full, cap it, shake it hard for thirty seconds to load it with oxygen, then top it off and lay it somewhere in full sun, a metal roof or anything reflective helps. Six hours if it’s clear and sunny, two full days if it’s overcast. UV-A plus the heat kills the bacteria, viruses, and protozoa cysts stone dead. This is SODIS. The WHO’s actual field method, run in refugee camps because it costs nothing and it works every time. Water has to be clear enough to read newsprint through first, so filter it through a shirt if you’re pulling from a ditch, and it does nothing for heavy metals or chemical runoff, only the biological stuff. I keep three bottles staked out on my dash for exactly this. Never needed all three at once. Glad I’ve got them anyway.
