People ask the machines who to read, who to buy from, who to call. The crawlers behind ChatGPT, Claude, and Perplexity read your raw HTML once and leave. They never run JavaScript. On a builder template they read a blank page with your name nowhere on it. Own the HTML and you own how you show up. Rent it and you're visible until the platform decides you aren't.

This is the main thing, and it changed. Your site sits on a global content network instead of a rented box, which means it loads fast from anywhere, it does not fall over when a hundred people show up at once, and it costs almost nothing to keep online. That last part is why the numbers below look the way they do. Here's what you get:

There's a real SQLite database available on this setup, so a site here is not stuck being a brochure. Bookings, a quote request that gets saved instead of emailed into a void, a customer list, a simple order form: all of that works, and it works without a monthly plugin bill.

What it will not run is WordPress, or anything else built on PHP and MySQL. I could sell you that stack and I am not going to. Those are the parts that get hacked, need patching forever, and quietly become somebody's problem at two in the morning. Nothing a working business actually needs from a website requires them.

Because a finished site is a folder of files, and files cost almost nothing to hand to somebody. There is no server sitting there burning money on your behalf, nothing running that has to be patched at two in the morning, no software licence with your name on it. Charging you a hundred a month for that would be the same racket I am telling you to walk away from, so I don't. Whether you built it, I built it, or you're moving one in, it's the same deal.

The rent-a-website shops around here will quote you $195 to $850 a month, and twelve months in you've spent thousands and own nothing but a login that stops working the day you stop paying. That's not a deal for somebody working for a living. You own this one from day one, whether I host it or not.
