Give One Page A Real Shot At Getting Found

// the everything pass All-Access The whole catalog, the members vault, and the back room where the operators talk shop. $37/yr →

The full field manual for pages that get found — Today’s brief runs the express lane. The guides shelf takes the long way over the same ground, from reading what a searcher actually wants to wiring the internal links that keep a page climbing long after the first afternoon. Go there when one page turns into ten and you need a system.

The One Page That Ranks

You’ve got a page that deserves traffic and gets none. Today we aim one of those at a phrase a real person actually searches.

One page. That’s the whole job today, folks. You’ll find a page that’s close to earning its keep and aim it at one phrase somebody’s typing into a search bar right now. Then you make the top of that page say it back, plain, before anybody scrolls. Forty minutes and the coffee’s still warm.

1 // Pick the page, then pick the phrase

Open your analytics and sort pages by traffic. Find one sitting close to the money that barely gets visited: an old guide, or a service page nobody scrolls past the fold. That’s your target. Now the phrase. Skip ‘copywriting,’ nobody wins a word that damn broad. You want the long one somebody types when they’re ready to act, something like ‘freelance copywriter for saas startups’ (and yeah, it’ll feel too narrow, that’s exactly the point). Run the search yourself. If page one is wall-to-wall billion-dollar brands, back off and get more specific until you find daylight. That phrase is the entire mission. Pick one you can actually win.

2 // Rewrite the top so the phrase is obvious

Three spots at the top, and only three. The title tag first, that’s the blue headline in the search result, edit it in your page settings or the SEO plugin box. Then the H1, the big headline a visitor actually sees on the page. Then the opening hundred words. Your phrase goes in all three, worded the way a person would say it out loud, never crammed. Best title format is phrase up front: ‘Freelance Copywriter for SaaS Startups | Your Name.’ The H1 can be looser. But the phrase has to land inside a real sentence in the first line or two of body copy, up where the eye hits first. If a stranger skimmed only the top and still couldn’t say what the page is for, that top isn’t doing its job yet.

3 // Point a strong page at the weak one

Back to the traffic report. Open your strongest page, the one already pulling visitors month after month. Somewhere in its body, drop one link that points at today’s page, and make the clickable words your target phrase or something close to it. Skip ‘click here.’ The link text tells the search engine what sits on the other end, so burn it on ‘click here’ and you’ve thrown the whole link away. One solid internal link from a page with real authority passes weight downhill to the page that needs it. Save, then load the live page yourself and confirm the link works.

Pick the page before you touch anything else today, and leave every other page the hell alone.

THE TIP. One page gets one phrase, full stop. Aim two of your pages at the same search term and they cannibalize each other, so the traffic splits and neither one ranks. Keep a plain running list of which page owns which phrase, and check it before you ever build the next one. The Method (free)

DEAD AIR · RIVERGATE / FOOD COURT

Every storefront gate got rolled down and zip-tied before the crew handed the wing over to demo. Morning walkthrough counts them. There are nine gates on the food court run. The walkthrough sheet, three days running, counts ten and moves on.

Hit reply and tell me the phrase you’re aiming at, fam. I’ve guessed wrong on which ones are winnable more times than I’d cop to, and a second read on your pick costs you nothing. ~ J.D.
